Welcome! The EHNE Community was started to advance the mid-range theory, originated by Dr. Katie Love. EHNE seeks to create teaching-learning spaces where students feel empowered and supported, mind, body, and spirit. EHNE is the only pedagogy specifically for nursing by nursing, and incorporates nursing's core values of love, holism, adovacy, care, and interconnectedness.
"Today’s practice includes patient centered care of diverse patient populations, and it is time we restructured nursing education to be student centered in the same way. EHNE creates an empowered classroom by role modeling self-care and advocacy against bias and discrimination, and co-creating emancipatory knowledge. This is a classroom environment where students are cared for and nurtured as holistic beings."
Students who experience the EHNE theory feel encouraged, cared for, are better able to provide self-care, and to be able to advocate for patients and communities. Faculty and Students who use EHNE will feel supported, less stressed, and more fulfilled in their teaching-learning experiences. Additionally, it is not just a "feel good" theory, but one that also recognizes bias and discrimination in all forms, and role models how to become empowered advocates, change agents, and nursing leaders. Below is an excerpt from the EHNE article published in the Journal of Creative Nursing:
"An example of this in practice can be seen with the experiences of students of color with racism, which have influenced experiences with society, education, and healthcare. The historical experiences of discrimination and harm done at the hands of doctors and nurses cannot be ignored when considering patient resistance to medical care. Likewise, anti-discrimination in the classroom must also be an important part of establishing an empowered and holistic classroom. The EHNE educator must also be aware of attempts to socialize students from non-dominant groups to the culture of nursing which is predominantly White, middle class, female, heterosexual, Christian, and able-bodied. Nurse educators must be aware of their own identity, privilege, and prior knowledgebefore teaching, and ask "What are my expectations about this information?" "How do I define professional behavior and why?" "What is my worldview and how is this content approached by groups different from me?" (pg 21)."
